I have graduated from executive programs such as the FBI Command School and the Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Homeland Defense and Executive Leaders Course at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.
Your Sheriff’s Office has established a cultural foundation of accountability and service to our citizens. We continue to recruit diverse deputy sheriffs, correctional officers and civilian support staff in a very challenging and competitive environment. We hire good people, train them well, reinvest in them and hold them accountable. We have developed a dynamic work force committed to community service and the safety of our county.
To preserve our quality of life in St. Mary’s County, we have utilized modern proactive crime-fighting strategies in quality partnerships with its citizens to decrease crime. Utilizing 21st century policing concepts, we are committed to community policing. We participate in traffic management and enforcement initiatives that improve highway safety and reduce death and injury. Our award-winning traffic safety initiatives have been recognized at the state level and nationally.
We work closely with local, state and federal law enforcement to solve crimes, and identify criminal enterprise. We collaborate with our partners to reduce the impact of heroin on our community by providing public education programs, and focus drug investigations on identifying those who supply deadly heroin and other illicit substances.
The adult detention center has regularly achieved 100 percent compliance from the Maryland Commission on Correctional Standards and our pre- trial release program is a recognized international model.
The proposed expansion project will support our ability to humanely incarcerate inmates as well as improve medical and mental health services, addictions treatment and educational programs. Our goal is to prepare inmates to reintegrate into our community and reduce recidivism.
It has been my privilege to serve over 25 years as a deputy sheriff, and the last 12 as your Sheriff, where I live and raise my family. I remain committed and passionate about our community, our cops and our responsibility to each other.
